What is “the Optimal Space Creation Project”?

-It is to create “superior space (buildings, regions, urban environments)” that began with our container manufacturing business origins.

That is our continuous mission.

Business Introduction

■Our business is

Everything is for the purpose of providing "Optimal containers"

For 74 years since our founding, our business has been providing high-quality containers. Its origins lie in the manufacture of decorative cans. Decorative cans are widely used for, such as seaweed cans, biscuit and cookie cans, rice cracker cans, coffee cans, etc., to keep food in optimal condition. They have also been used for art cans, which depict characters in 3D on the surface, and have contributed to the development of our company for many years.

As times changed, we gradually shifted from manufacturing cans to manufacturing and marketing plastic containers, and at the same time, we launched a real estate business and then entered the solar power generation business. In the real estate business, we consider buildings as “the containers” that hold houses, companies, people, and things, while solar power generation protects what we call, “the containers” as the natural environment, the earth, and society. We see all of these businesses have a common concept as providing “optimal containers.”

Currently, commercial real estate is our main business, and we are required to improve the quality of buildings, and to increase their existence value, added value, and brand value. With this continuous mission, we will continue to take on new business challenges.

We are now embarking on new challenges. Please look forward to what Nikko Group Holdings has to offer.

■Real Estate Business

Our real estate business kicked off with the development of our first company-owned commercial building in 1987, “Hakata Nikko Building”, locating one step away from Hakata station in Fukuoka.
Following the development of our first building, the company acquired two other buildings in its hometown of Osaka, consolidating its head office functions in one of them, the Ueroku Nikko Building, and made a major shift to expanding the real estate business by selling off its former head office and factory facilities in Higashinari.
Over the next three years, we acquired three more buildings in Kyoto, Shibuya, and Yokohama, bringing our total number of tenant buildings to six, and this has been functioning as our core business.

We will continue to strive to provide better quality and services for Nikko Buildings, increase the brand value, and aim to further expand the Nikko Building network globally.

■Resin Container manufacturing

Our resin products business is mainly composed of the manufacturing and sale of containers that has shifted from our founding business of can manufacturing. This business transformation is due to the trend shift from metal to resin material in the container market over time. The manufacturing methods for the same container are completely different between metal and resin, however, there is something universal about the technology that goes into making good containers.

The food companies that have long used our canned products are now switching from metal to plastic containers, and as we were one of the first to start manufacturing plastic containers, they have come to appreciate the quality of our products and continue to use our plastic containers.

In the future, we plan to utilize our container manufacturing know-how to expand the variety of resin materials we offer and broaden our business area.

■Solar power business

Our entry into the solar power business began in 2015, when the United Nations established the 17 SDGs, there was a growing trend among Japanese companies to set the SDGs as their management goals, and renewable energy was attracting more attention. We first installed solar power generation equipment on the rooftop of our Sanda resin products Factory.
Thanks to the government’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme for Renewable Energy, the business became stable, and in the following year of 2016, we acquired land for a solar power generation business in Hashimoto City, Wakayama Prefecture, which significantly expanded our generating capacity, and constructed power generation facilities, allowing us to fully launch our electricity sales business.

Since then, the continued decline in feed-in tariffs has made it difficult to make additional investments, and it is unclear whether the solar power generation business will expand beyond its existing two power generation facilities.

However, we believe that renewable energy businesses are meaningful from the perspective of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore plan to continue the business for the time being.
